[Q] Does Gold plating on RJ45 plugs really make a difference in
performance?
[A] Yes. Most people purchasing cables in a retail shop probably
do not even realize that there is a difference in performance
based on whether the RG45 plus has standard metal contacts,
or 50 Micron Gold Plating.
The
difference is speed is almost unimaginable. Cheap, mass-produced
cables often have no Gold Plating in the contacts. The efficiency
of these cables can be as poor as 20% of a similar cable constructed
of like materials, the eception being the cheap, bargain plug
with no Gold Plating.
Gold
is a much better conductor than many other common metals, and
as a result the performnce of a connection can be greatly improved
if it is used. The amount of signal loss is far less using Gold
than other cheaper materials.
Before
you buy a Networking Cable, regardless of whether it is a CAT
5 Patch Cable, a CAT 5e Patch Cable, or a Crossover Cable be
sure to find out if the RJ45 plug being used in the contruction
of the cable have at least 50 Micron Gold Plating.
