[Q] Do I have to use Plenum rated cable for high temperature
applications?
[A] Plenum rated cable has a specialized outer jacket, and on the
individual wires that is designed to be flame retardant and
produce minimal smoke if involved in a fire. This does not mean
that cable that is installed in warmer environments has to be
Plenum rated to do the job.
The
question has been raised on more than one occasion about installation
of cable in environments that will experience temperatures in
the 100 to 120 degree temperature range. Many people think that
because of this heat that they must have Plenum cable. This
is not true. A top quality CAT 5 or CAT 5e material
will easily withstand environments up to 150 degrees without
damaging the cable.
Requirements
for plenum cables are usually rooted in local codes, or standards
set by the client when the installation is being designed. In
some locations, building codes may dictate the specific types
of cable must be used in certain locations, this may or may
not involve Plenum.
The
best course of action would be to check local codes to find
out what the specific requirements are for your area. Also
the client will often have a very clear list of specifications
involved in the design of the building network, especially if
the installation is to be HIPPA compliant.
It
is always best to do a little research before you start.
